How to prevent and recover from ransomware

Ransomware attacks aren’t going anywhere but up. Is security enough to fight back, or do we need to think bigger?

06 August 2021

The first known ransomware attack occurred in 1989, when a researcher used an electronic survey to send malware to AIDS researchers, locking PCs in demand for $200 – an incident that is now dubbed the AIDS Trojan.

Much like its viral counterpart, ransomware has become a pandemic of unbelievable proportions. According to Statista, criminals launched 304 million ransomware attacks in 2020, 62% more than in 2019. Out of all the types of cybercrime that organisations face, ransomware easily represents the most significant risk. Last year, companies paid an estimated $500 million in ransoms to unlock their data.
