On the spot: Architecting the cloud

Cloud computing is changing the way IT is delivered and impacting everything from an enterprise’s architecture down.

02 April 2013

The way IT solutions are procured, implemented and delivered is changing rapidly, mainly due to the advent of cloud delivery models. In this On the Spot, Brainstorm looks at the impact of cloud on enterprise architecture.

✹ Cloud delivery is forcing enterprise architects to abandon centralised thinking, which presumed that critical systems co-residing on a common infrastructure and security domain is optimal. This is no longer the case. In fact, decentralised architectures position companies to be more competitive in today’s idea-driven economy because industries themselves are decentralising. Lower acquisition costs of SaaS-delivered solutions forced enterprise architects to reactively incorporate cloud-based solutions. But the real disruption for architects is that business relationships are becoming more transient and yet more tightly integrated over time. The ability to manage a frequently changing federation of cloud-connected systems will one day separate winners from losers. Erik Johnson, VP technical strategy, Epicor
