Bring the cloud mountain to medium-sized enterprises

What unique barriers do medium-sized organisations face with digital transformation?

31 March 2021

SMMEs form the backbone of modern economies, and medium-size enterprises (MSEs) are its core. Thus MSEs must modernise digitally. But it’s slow going. Smaller companies can rely on services and thin IT estates. Large businesses can afford to play the long game and absorb the risks. But MSEs are in a somewhat uncomfortable situation.

Although cost is a factor for any company, MSEs are particularly sensitive to pricing, says Dr Simon Abbott, a specialist consultant working with medical companies. “When MSEs are approached with digital, the budgets speak louder than what their intentions are. It’s much more based on budgetary constraints, flexibility of funds, and so on. There are then the other issues ‒ who can lead it? Where do the skills line with? How do we enter into this arena of transformation? But cost is an overwhelming consideration.”
