Doing more with less

IT is under pressure to build on the digital wave coming out of the pandemic. How should it go about it?

Ask anyone in the IT industry, and they’ll say Covid-19 lit a fire under digital transformation. The sudden shift to new work modes leaned heavily on digital technologies, which came to the rescue to exceed everyone’s expectations. Boardrooms and exco huddles are suddenly much more familiar with and excited about such technologies, and eagerly support their IT people to realise those ambitions.

But just because everyone wants to go digital hasn’t magically changed digital’s demands. Transformation is still a costly and risky endeavour that is tricky to realise and often tectonic in how it changes companies. Throw in the austere conditions companies have to operate in as a result of the pandemic, and it’s a situation of the spirit being keen, but the body trailing behind.
