Open-source software is being widely integrated into critical business operations, blazing a trail of award-winning innovations for the businesses opting into it.

Open source has come of age, with billions being spent on a string of acquisitions of open source companies.

VMware acquired Heptio for $550 million in 2018, F5 acquired NGINX for $670 million this year, while SUSE was also bought by EQT for $2.5 billion. All these were however dwarfed by the largest software acquisition to date: IBM’s buy-out of Red Hat for $34 billion.
