Immersive technology hardware like Oculus Rift, HTC’s Vive and Microsoft’s Hololens might not currently capture much market share locally. But that’s not stopping some South African organisations from putting virtual and augmented reality to good use.

Imagine going through intensive training to become a construction worker, and discovering at the last moment you’re afraid of heights.

That was a problem ArcelorMittal was battling with, until it hired Cape Town’s virtual reality company Sea Monster to design an immersive experience so potential workers could feel what it’s like to stand on a platform 200ft high, without leaving the safety of the ground.
