There's a map for that

Cameras on Uber vehicles will help improve the company’s mapping technology.

10 April 2017

Cape Town and Johannesburg are the first African cities to have Uber’s mapping vehicles deployed on its streets. The fleet of futuristic-looking cars will drive as normal on the app-based taxi service, picking up and dropping off passengers. However, cameras affixed to the car’s roof will continuously capture images of its surroundings, to help improve the technology Uber’s whole business is based on: mapping.

Nearly a dozen Uber cars took streams of photographs in and around Cape Town in November last year, and the camera-laden vehicles started on Johannesburg in February this year.
