The systems reliability engineer

This is the person who ensures that the foundations your company builds will stand the test of time.

06 February 2021

The systems reliability engineer makes sure that every software system and service that your company builds today is built to last. They’re the people who hold up the applications, bare-handed. They push up the services with a single finger. And they ensure that the uptime of apps and services is so high that only a fraction separates their percentage from 100. This is the role that puts the R into reliability over the long and short term and is becoming increasingly important as DevOps takes root in companies of all shapes and sizes.

“The systems reliability engineer is a developer-sysadmin hybrid focused on both development and coding and on the seamless operation of software and applications,” says Mandla Mbonambi, CEO of Africonology Solutions. “In this role, the software engineer focuses on the reliability and uptime of applications and services, not just in the short term, but with a focus on scalability and long-term use.”
