Can we can spam?

Unsolicited bulk emails have been around for years, but thanks to advances in filtering, spam’s presence has become less obtrusive. Will incoming privacy legislation be the final nail in its coffin?

“Dear Sir, I am a lawyer and write to inform you that a client of mine passed away leaving an unclaimed substantial inheritance. My deceased client, who has no family members and shares the same surname as yourself, has assets totalling £2 billion. My team will be able to assist in claiming this significant money on your behalf. We just need your bank account details and a small upfront payment. I look forward to your response.”

A few years ago, messages like this flooded our email accounts. Today, an odd unsolicited mail courageously breaks ranks and finds its way through the filters and into our inboxes. However, from personal experience, the spam folder is nowhere near as heavily laden as it used to be. So, on the whole, we’ve solved email spam. Right?
