When the first few cases of Covid-19 started spreading around the world, the South African government had plenty of time to plan its moves.

“You know you’re going to get your first case and you’re in a conundrum about what to do, but at that stage, you can sit and mull over what you’re going to do for a while,” says data scientist Dr Vukosi Marivate.
