Free the weed... then tax it

 When Peter Tosh sang his heartfelt plea to ‘legalise marijuana’ for health reasons some 40 years ago, he never imagined a world where CBD, at least, could be bought almost anywhere. And if CBD is the first step, what comes next?

While it may be too early to suggest that the hippies were right, there’s a growing acceptance of cannabis around the world, even in previously antidrug nations. Cannabidiol (CBD), in particular, is rapidly making inroads into the market due to the many health benefits attributed to it.

CBD is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis, but unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the most prevalent element – it doesn’t cause a ‘high’. In fact, the World Health Organisation indicates that, ‘In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential’. Thanks to this, CBD has been touted as a treatment for a multitude of health issues.
