So, you want to be a game designer?

South Africa isn’t being left behind when it comes to curating and training the technical talent that litters its marvellous landscape.

13 August 2018

Anyone can become a game designer. You do not have to be a lanky, long-haired 20-year-old boy with a deep love of Fortnite, or a hairy, overweight stereotype with a passion for computer games. In fact, most of the ideas that are associated with the game designer should be burned at the stake. There is no mould, no perfect game designer shape and no absolute personality. What does define the game designer is a meticulous passion for the creativity of both the medium and the technology that drives it.

Game design is possibly one of the greatest levellers of student and status. For those who want to change career in their mid-40s, there is Friends of Design, a one-year higher certificate in game graphics and multimedia entertainment. This course gives students insight into different types of games, their applications in the creative, business, marketing and entertainment sectors, and a thorough market understanding.
