In Cape Town there are parks aplenty, beach coves, shady forest groves and, of course, that flat-headed chunk of rock smack dab in the middle of everything to prmote the enjoyment of picnics – bar the occasional baboon or mugger. So, rather than focus on places to go (you can hardly miss ‘em), this is a round-up of places to find the most scrumptious treats to pack into your basket and impress your friends without falling back on Woolies.

Melissa`s (425-5540) in Kloof Street is the obvious first stop for their divine ‘hamper boxes` which you can fill with sumptuous savouries or sweets, including fresh tomato salsa and homemade corn chips, chilli ginger jam and camembert and a variety of home-made treats with a twist, such as chocolate and cherry panaforte, grappa chocolates or the infamous vanilla fudge.
