Consolidation is a major trend in business. Now it is happening in the software industry, and looks set to continue as the market matures.

Numerous mergers and acquisitions have taken place recently, but the highest profile deals have been HP/Compaq and Oracle`s hostile bid for PeopleSoft. Then there are Symantec`s bid to acquire Veritas and IBM`s desire to offload its PC division on Chinese PC manufacturer, Lenovo. All parties seemed to welcome these deals.
