A fool with a tool is still a fool

Testing is an important facet of software development – and a number of vendors peddle automated testing tools.

The tools can be useful, but they are by no means an elixir for software developers.

The jury is still out on the value that automated software-testing tools deliver to software developers. Recent research commissioned by software tool vendor Compuware, and conducted by Forrester Consulting, found that 44 percent of organisations have never invested in quality testing tools for application development.

According to Thomas Cronje, quality assurance architect at Compuware SA, the company was motivated to commission the research by its own experiences. “In our own environment we found that, without an underlying process, we weren`t finding the value we should have been finding in the tools.”
