Defining the CFO in the digital age

 The CFO is a surprising champion of digital technology. But what does that mean, and what do they need to fully support business transformation?

The confluence of digital technology and information-based decision-making has moved chief financial officers (CFOs) into the spotlight. Once considered the people who block lofty technology projects, they are now emerging as one of the biggest enablers and champions of digital transformation. This is due to a changing reality of what technology can do and how it is provisioned. At the same time, the CFO role is intuitively one that uses data, and, as such, they frequently walk the line between business demands and technological possibilities. These are among the findings of research, the ‘CFO 3.0’ report, commissioned by Sage. In this Brainstorm executive roundtable, our attendees unpacked the CFO’s emerging reality.

“I think this is the perfect opportunity for CFOs to rise to the occasion, and redefine themselves,” said Kevin Govender, Deloitte’s ERP leader. “ We look at CFOs from four dimensions – catalyst, strategist, steward and operator. And I think they need to operate in all four dimensions. But what’s important is the split between those four areas. How much time do you spend on each?”
