Breaking bad

What is your most valuable data, and what are you doing to protect it?

28 January 2021

On the very day this roundtable was held in early October, the multinational Software AG revealed it had fallen foul of a ransomware attack. The ‘Clop’ gang demanded $20 million, and when this was not forthcoming, started posting Software AG’s data online. Despite the company having a mature security stack and operations team, it still proved to be vulnerable, which begs the question: what can ordinary companies do?

Plenty, as it turns out, but a good place to start is making sure that defences are in place, and that users are included in security discussions. Another thing to consider is keeping a clean set of recent, missioncritical data separate from the production and backup environments, which can be used to restore IT and business operations in the event of a serious breach. How prepared are South African businesses? And how resilient are their cybersecurity plans?
