Paying it forward in the boiler room

Penny Futter might be a problem-solving introvert, but African Bank’s Group CIO knows a thing or two about getting the most out of people.

Several years ago, a banking CIO shared this anecdote. They were standing inside the operations centre of a major local bank, one that features an electronic scrolling ticker board displaying the bank’s earnings every second. Something happened, and suddenly some of the systems went offline. He said you could immediately see the drop on the board as earnings went into the red. At a bank, tripping over a power cable literally costs money.

Penny Futter never imagined she’d build a career in such a high-pressure environment. Not that she’s averse to banking. Instead, she never considered digital technology as her ticket – at least not until she reached university.
