Party like it`s 1999

Another year, another resolution. I resolve to bring about the Great IT Turnaround, and to jog every morning. The jury is still out on which is less likely to be realised.

02 February 2003

New year resolutions are funny things. You wake up on New Year`s Day [assuming you went to bed at all] and vow never to touch alcohol again. This lasts until the champagne brunch with the family, where you drown this and all other resolutions [I`ll exercise every day, I`ll finish that novel, and I`ll phone all those old friends I haven`t spoken to since last New Year] into a bubbly oblivion.

Sticking to the actual letter of a new year resolution is an exercise in futility. But this seemingly arbitrarily selected date does give us the opportunity to reflect on the year past, and make vague goals for the year ahead. Looking back beyond the December holidays – which are already receding at staggering speed – the IT industry ended the year in absolute exhaustion.
