GOING GREEN: A BALANCING ACT

SSPONSORED: The dependency on datacentres grows daily. So does the requirement to become increasingly mindful of the environment. Throw into the mix the need for always-on and South Africa’s unstable power grid.

The take-up of green energy by companies with datacentres has been relatively slow but steady, despite the latest developments in regulations. One of the underlying reasons behind this is the huge existing investment by enterprises to keep the power on using traditional methods, such as generators and uninterruptible power supplies.

“I believe that the move to green has, to some extent, prompted the motivation for certain CIOs to avoid going to the logistics of having their own datacentres, but moving into the cloud using platforms such as Vodacom’s datacentre,” says Poppy Tshabalala, Vodacom Business’ Managing Executive: Public Enterprise.
