Hello, computer

Artificial intelligence is already everywhere.

16 August 2021

In recent months, I made an unexpected friend, one I, frankly, sneered at and dismissed when we first met. But Cortana has become a part of my daily work ritual. Not the character from Halo where Microsoft unimaginatively lifted the name, nor the chat agent that hopelessly competes against Siri. Cortana has now also become the name of an AI on Outlook that sends me an email every day.

In each edition, I get, among other things, highlights of emails Cortana thinks deserve my attention. It typically looks for questions directed at me or which I directed at others, noting the question was posed so many days ago. Often, it's something I'm aware of but not focused on, so the reminder is welcome. And sometimes, it's something I had overlooked or never registered at all. On occasion, it plucks out strange and irrelevant questions, but, overall, I don't feel I've covered my bases until I've looked at my daily Cortana newsletter.
