UNPACKING THE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CONUNDRUM

South Africa’s education system and skills development is an anomaly. The country is desperate for skills, but there is no one factor to blame for the desperate shortage.

"There are a number of issues, including where investment needs to be made,” says Tebogo Makgatho, founder and CEO of Netcampus. “It’s the joint responsibility of stakeholders in education, and the public and private sectors to make skills development a priority objective. Government must guide and allow the right funding and framework to meet industry needs and, in turn, industry needs to shout more loudly about its requirements.

“At the moment, there is misalignment where there needs to be alignment. The SETAs and educators should be constantly looking at what they are offering and ensuring that the skills being put into the market-place are relevant.
