 The blossoming space of tech solutions aimed at the township market was on the ropes in 2020. But they’re not all throwing in the towel.

Four years ago, Siya Ntutela and Mdu Thabethe saw an opportunity to service the country’s promising township economy. They launched a platform powered by USSD technology that offers spaza shop owners credit to buy goods delivered to them by the startup. Business grew.

At the beginning of 2020, their startup Zande Africa employed over 60 people and served 1 700 spaza shops in Mpumalanga. Then the pandemic struck.
