The great debate: Uber’s approach to its driver workforce is put under the microscope

When Uber burst onto the scene in South Africa in 2013, it unlocked the city travel for many people. No longer did we have to rely on creaky cabs with their frightening meters ticking away on the dashboard. Technology brought visibility into this opaque industry, and overnight, the feet were swept from under the incumbents.

The taxi industry has always been a fierce one in South Africa, with arguments often solved with a half brick, or a can of petrol. Tempers flared between taxi and Uber drivers, and there didn’t seem to be much anyone could do. Lives were also lost. The app may have won the day, but it’s become clear that the Uber drivers are the real losers.
