The magic behind quadrants

Gartner`s magic quadrants are justifiably famous. Its rating of business intelligence vendors in particular has been popular for years. Recently, however, a certain level of controversy has sprung up around the quadrants and their use.

Two months ago, Frank Buytendijk told Brainstorm that the latest business intelligence (BI) quadrants were about to be released. Early in August, Gartner`s Symposium/ITXpo in Cape Town provided a perfect platform for their launch.

And that was the plan. “The original plan was a worldwide première here in South Africa,” said the research house`s Amsterdam-based BI analyst, Buytendijk. While it is always a pleasure talking to someone who has such an impressive understanding of what remains a complex and fast-moving vendor landscape, the interest was piqued by the fact that the new quadrants were still delayed.

The reasons for this are not only testament to their impact and importance, but also provide a rare and useful glimpse into their technical basis and applicability.
