There might be some doubts and some complaints about it, but the JSE Securities Exchange is forging ahead, undaunted – battling to raise liquidity and shake off that “wild west” tag.

A combination of factors has conspired to raise questions about the continued relevance of the JSE Securities Exchange. Exchange control regulations have made it an unlikely bourse on which foreign companies will raise capital, although they have also ensured its continued local existence. The economic downturn and relatively small size of South African companies have resulted in a lower number of listed companies, and liquidity on the exchange remains well below international standards.
