Riaan van Wamelen talks about growing South African trade, the rise of information services, and the implications of South Africa’s junk status.

Riaan van Wamelen is the CIO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). He has been with the organisation for nine years. “Quite a stint,” he says, “but the ongoing evolution has kept me entertained.”

Van Wamelen embarked on his career after completing a B.Com with majors in accounting and information systems at the University of Pretoria. He initially worked in software development, but after a few years, he realised he wanted to ‘move into understanding the business context behind the technical solutions’.
