“In life, everybody must have dreams. Mine is to go to the Ironman championships in Hawaii. It’s an increasingly difficult dream as you need to do at least 12 Ironman challenges before you can pre-qualify. So far, I’ve completed 10, and for the past three years, I’ve done half Ironman competitions overseas to get some exposure to different environments.”

The Ironman is a series of long-distance triathlon races, consisting of a 3.9km swim, a 180km bicycle ride and a marathon. Training for and competing in these, says Vodacom CIO Willie Stegmann, speaks to his character. “Ironman takes a lot of commitment and determination. It’s about setting a goal and working hard, with discipline, to achieve it.”
