The NHI dream

The universal healthcare die has been cast, the NHI will happen, but to say there's still plenty of work to be done is an understatement.

To put it mildly, there’s been plenty of discussion around the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill, its implementation and potential impact. The tenets are admirable: creating a unified health system by improving financing and reducing the fragmentation of funding pools. It also aims to make healthcare delivery more affordable and accessible for a ll. Implementation, however, will be a gargantuan task, not least because of much-needed cooperation between the public and private sectors. Brainstorm kept the NHI conversation going with a roundtable discussion. The first question to those attending was: what does a successful implementation look like?

Former Gauteng health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa is well versed in the Bill, and starts by saying the debate about whether it’s going to be implemented ‘is now over’. “My posture is that we can get there if we work together and leverage all our knowledge and skills. It’s the common dream.”
