The Massachusetts bun fight

An interesting battle has developed in the US – specifically in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (CoM).

01 November 2005

Some time ago, government at the home of Harvard, Yale and MIT, started work on its Enterprise Technical Reference Model (ETRM) – an architectural framework used to identify the standards, specifications and technologies that support CoM`s computing environment. The framework became effective last month.

According to the web site (www.mass.gov) the ETRM uses the concepts of domains, disciplines, technology areas and technology specifications to define the enterprise architecture.

However, buried within this model is an ironclad requirement for the use of the OpenDocument Format (ODF) for storing data. Wikipedia: “The OpenDocument format, short for the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications, is an open document file format for saving and exchanging editable office documents such as text documents, spread sheets, charts and presentations. This standard was developed by the OASIS industry consortium, based upon the XML-based file format originally created by OpenOffice.org.”
