5G connectivity won't just empower the world of IoT and driverless cars; companies are exploring the possibility of holographic video calls.

In July this year, speaking at the Digital Economy Summit in Midrand, President Cyril Ramaphosa demonstrated holographic video calling (HVC). While physically addressing the audience in Gauteng, his holographic likeness simultaneously spoke to a crowd 130km away at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.

“The definition of a hologram is an image created by a photographic projection of a recording or stream of a light field, rather than an image formed by some sort of lens,” says Victor Swanepoel, business manager for Radio Access Network Services, Nokia South Africa.
