In a world polluted by incidents of nation-state attacks and cyber espionage, backdoor attacks are often viewed as exaggerated, ‘cloak and dagger’ tools. They aren’t. In reality, they’re soaring in popularity and present a very real threat to public and private sector organisations across the globe.

Rik Ferguson, vice president of security research at Trend Micro, says at the highest level, a backdoor refers to a route into a target that bypasses normal authentication or encryption mechanisms.
