As recently as four years ago, Leigh Ann Booysen worked gruelling shifts as a drill operator at the Kolomela mine of Kumba Iron Ore, the world’s fourth largest producer of iron ore.

That meant sitting on a truck-sized drilling machine in the Northern Cape-based pit for eight hours, drilling holes in which explosives could be placed before blasting. It was tough work.
