The IT skills cupboard is bare

Recent ITWeb articles on a move to seek ICT skills outside South Africa sparked a wave of outrage from local IT professionals, who say the skills exist within the country.

Government and industry players say they don`t.

The Public Service and Administration Department recently announcement that several occupations were being placed on a list of scarce skills, and 23 000 qualified applicants from outside South Africa would be encouraged to apply for quota work permits to fill the gaps.

The list made provision for 2 500 ICT professionals – 1 000 silicon and microchip developers and 1 500 software developers.
