There’s a dawning awareness that the workplace is vital to the success of digital strategies. Indeed, as Gartner puts it, you can’t become a digital business unless you have a digital workplace. There are also numerous advanced technologies starting to be employed in organisations, such as AI and advanced analytics and video technologies that are making it easier to work more collaboratively. With the changing face of the workforce, the shift to a digital workplace is, in many cases, being led by the employee.

The employee experience is often an afterthought, and many organisations are still battling to provide an experience that will satisfy the new mobile workforce. Too often, a company will just issue a new hire with a machine, leading in the case of VMware lead technologist Ian Jansen van Rensburg, to a swift exit.
He remembers how he took up a job at another company a number of years ago, and they supplied him with a ‘massive HP laptop that was locked down by the IT department’.
