Kenya’s startup scene is undergoing a renaissance.

“The Kenyan tech ecosystem is rising again after a few years of downtime.” So says Dr Bitange Ndemo, former permanent secretary at Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communication and considered one of the founding fathers of the country’s tech scene.

‘Downtime’ is a fair assessment of what has been happening in Kenya over the last few years. The East African nation established itself as an African tech hub around a decade ago, with the birth of the iHub, the launch of groundbreaking mobile money service M-Pesa, and the success of crowdmapping startup Ushahidi.
