In 2014, Oxfam classified South Africa as a ‘food-secure’ country. At the time, the country produced enough calories to feed our 53 million people. However, despite considerable progress since the dawn of democracy in 1994, one in every four persons still suffered from hunger on a regular basis.

Now, according to 2020 studies by Oxfam, 60% of South Africa’s population depends on small-scale farming to meet their basic needs, and the pandemic will worsen the problem.
