A hunger to help

In solving the problem of food security, production isn’t the issue, it seems. It’s the distribution. How can technology help to alleviate the challenges?

An unacceptably high amount of food in the world is wasted, leaving millions without enough to eat. The World Wide Fund for Nature estimates as much as a third of the world’s food goes to waste. South Africa, according to the conservation group, is right on trend with equally high levels of food waste. It’s estimated that roughly 10 million tonnes of food is wasted in the country each year.

As food waste rises, so have the statistics on hunger. The world has also seen chronic hunger rise in recent years, with projections showing that if the status quo is maintained, more than 840 million people will go hungry by 2030, with Africa overtaking Asia as the region most affected.
