Un-levelling the playing field

Gambling and sports betting still hold an incredible appeal: it’s an opportunity for people to gain something from ‘nothing’. But how is modern tech changing the game?

If the house always wins, why roll the dice in the first place? Because there’s always the chance that backing the underdog or placing your bet on red or black may just earn you a few extra bucks. But, according to psychologists, the allure of betting and gambling isn’t only about making money, it’s about taking risks and escaping everyday life. And for many, it’s about strategy. Today, the industry is undergoing massive changes thanks to new technologies, providing opportunities for bookies, and consumers, to change their tactics.

Back in the day, all sports betting was done on paper, says Deron van Staden, trading floor manager for World Sports Betting. With technology, there’s greater traceability, accountability and security for the customer.
