SAP has launched a sports management platform, initially aimed at the local football industry. But is it shooting above the crossbar?

Brad Pitt sits at a large table, surrounded by old whiteboards and even older men, who’ve been doing things the same way for years. He rallies them to join the revolution he’s building. “We are card counters, at the blackjack table. But, we’re going to turn the odds on the casino.”

The scene comes from the film Moneyball, which details the fortunes of the Oakland A’s baseball club under general manager Billy Beane. The club was being financially out-muscled by wealthier competition. Beane, along with economist-turned-assistant-GM Peter Brand, introduced the importance of data and statistics into building a team to gain competitive advantage.
