Putting wild South Africa on the map

An ambitious mapping project has unified communities and showcased the beauty of SA’s national parks.

Climbing Cathedral Peak is a daunting challenge at the best of times, but imagine doing it while you’re laden down by a 22kg backpack bristling with 15 cameras. Bumping into a pride of lions while you’re bearing the backpack has also added a touch of extra excitement to some already arduous bush walks.

The backpack contains technologies to plot the exact location of the cameras and to trigger 360-degree photographs every two seconds. The results are wonderful, with the cameras capturing panoramic views that have put all of South Africa’s national parks onto Google Street View.
