The days of the grand teaching institution imperiously doling out its precious knowledge to humble learners are over.

There are myriad approaches to training, from university diplomas to online short courses by global providers. In between are the hybrids: the increasingly popular blend of face-to-face and online, synchronous and asynchronous teaching, public and private partnerships, and modules that can stand alone or form part of a sequence.

“I’ve trained in areas from new tools and drawing techniques to agile methodologies and negotiation techniques,” says Lisa Basel, development manager at Adapt IT Holdings. “In today’s world, and in this industry, you can’t stand still: your skills move forward or you’re left behind.” But what to learn next is just the first question; the next question is how to learn it.
