It’s not often when starting an interview that you get a question shot back at you. Josh Perry, head engineer at Rooster Mornings, wants to know how I feel about waking up in the morning. Me: “Depends; some days, not so good, some days, it’s fine.”

Perry, 25, who was born in Durban, but now lives in Cape Town and is part of the thriving startup ecosystem, says most people, including his business partner Dominic Koenig, ‘absolutely hate it’.
