The first challenging realisation that faced Mimi Omokri, now head of Business in Sub-Saharan Africa for Uber, when she first left Nigeria and moved to London was that race and gender would impact her life in the technology landscape.

“I realised it was all about fitting in – I would walk into a room and because I am black and my accent is strong, people would struggle to understand me,” she says. “I was also battling to understand them. I had to adjust the way I listened. This is, to my mind, one of the biggest challenges for women of colour.”
