Launched in 2016 and capitalised by almost 50 JSE-listed firms, the SA SME Fund is a ‘fund of funds’ built to invest in venture capital firms that back small South African businesses, help them grow, and create jobs.
Thus far, the fund has mostly invested in traditional VC funds across a host of sectors, but in September, it announced a slightly leftfield investment, pouring R152.5 million into a soon-to-be-launched University Technology Fund (UTF).
