The road to 4IR is built at universities

Khathu Sibanda is helping UJ get ready for 4IR. But the real change happens among the students – and those willing to listen to them.

A university is a strange place to find Khathu Sibanda. Not that she isn’t eminently qualified and continues to have a deep-seated appreciation for learning. The expanded opportunities for her and her family to study was one reason why she joined as the chief information officer at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Yet if you look at her professional experience, Sibanda could go anywhere. She is a particularly rare breed of CIO, even in today’s world, since she is equally comfortable with technology, governance, and walking the business talk. Sibanda started her career as a graduate in training, progressing to various positions, such as senior advisor of information systems and project manager at Eskom. She was eventually promoted to running the technology for the energy provider’s Generation Group.
