A career built on gratitude and hard work

Nomthi Nelwamondo, joint winner of the 2020 IITPSA Visionary CIO award is proof that South Africa is well on its path to true diversity.

03 June 2021

South Africa is a transforming society. This often goes unnoticed in the daily back-and-forth of living, but the faces inside corporate South Africa have been changing considerably since the 1990s. Specifically, we should take a moment to consider that one of the joint winners of this year’s IITPSA Visionary CIO award is a black woman who rose through the ranks of business and technology to take on the most senior of technology leadership roles.

Nomthi Nelwamondo, group CIO for Assupol Holdings, has held at least three such roles. She was Telkom’s managing executive for group IT, then Liquid Telecoms’ CIO, before joining Assupol. That’s a remarkable achievement and reflects how SA Inc. is embracing diversity. Nelwamondo acknowledges this progress, but notes that we’re only at the start of the journey.
