The man who would save SITA

Digital leadership is essential to the success of a digital government. How is government’s IT agency faring?

11 October 2019

SITA sits in the middle of government’s technology estate, and it’s hard to think of another agency with so much responsibility for dragging South Africa into the Fourth Industrial Revolution. But aside from this kind of aspirational goal, it must also provision and manage the foundations upon which all government departments are built. SITA has had an extremely high turnover of CEOs (see sidebar) and is now looking for its 20th in as many years.

The current CEO is Ntutule Tshenye, who used to be the executive for strategic stakeholder management at the agency. He’s been in an acting capacity since April and took over from Dr Setumo Mohapi, who finished his four-year contract at the end of March. Mohapi refused the offer of a six-month extension for health reasons, and he’s now the CEO of Internet Solutions.
