Advertorial: Baptism of fire

The Covid-19 emergency plunged Sanlam’s new CIO and his team into a maelstrom that saw them implement in days what should have taken months or years.

12 July 2020

Theo Mabaso officially took over as Sanlam Group CIO on 1 January 2020, just as the Covid-19 storm was about to break. Suddenly, the business needed a minimum of approximately 12 000 people to be enabled to work remotely. At the time, around 700 were ready to go, and Mabaso cannot keep the pride out of his voice as he itemises the miracles his team was able to pull off in a scant seven days. “I’ve never seen anything like it in more than 20 years in IT,” he says.

Enabling employees across Sanlam’s many different businesses to work remotely would have been a tall order—doing it in days was unthinkable…until it became necessary.
