It’s always been tough in the gig economy. Now, a new report shows just how tough.

Everyone knows that Uber and the other companies that run the gig economy have always insisted that they don’t actually employ the people who use their platforms to make their living. They’re independent contractors, so the argument goes, with flexible hours. What this means is that the platform companies can avoid the costs and duties associated with employees’ rights, such as sick leave, for instance.
